Dried Hibiscus Flowers – Hibiscus sabdariffa
Hibiscus flowers are a rich and versatile addition to your natural dye collection. Known for their deep pink tones, these petals are ideal for bundle-dyeing, eco-printing, and dye baths. Their high acidity makes them particularly interesting to work with, often producing shades of mauve, dusty pink, plum, or grey depending on fibre type, modifier and mordant.
Hibiscus can produce subtle botanical imprints when used whole, or be steeped to extract their pigment. They respond beautifully to iron modifiers, creating moody, cool-toned effects perfect for layering or adding depth to a piece.
Botanical name: Hibiscus sabdariffa
Best used for: Bundle-dyeing, eco-printing, dye baths, iron modifiers
Colour range: Pink, burgundy, mauve, grey (varies with mordant and fibre)
Recommended mordants: Alum for bright pinks; iron for muted purples and greys
Fibre compatibility: Works well on silk, wool, and plant fibres
Form: Whole dried petals
Lightfastness: Moderate (best on protein fibres and when over-dyed or layered)
Sprinkle directly onto damp fabric for scattered impressions, or brew a concentrated hibiscus dye bath to dip, soak, or paint onto cloth.
