Natural Dyeing Workshop: Discover the Art of Plant Pigments
Join Katie from Studio Tinta for a hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop where you’ll dive into the world of natural dyeing! Learn four exciting techniques—bundle-dyeing (eco-printing), resist dyeing, ink painting, and flower pounding—and leave with a set of beautiful, hand-dyed textiles made by you.
Workshop Details:
Newcastle/Muloobinba: Saturday 24 May, 2-5pm @ The Pavilion by Slingtown, 150 Young St, Carrington
Gosford/Darkinjung: Saturday 21 June, 1-4pm @ Gosford Regional Art Gallery, Studio 3
Sydney/Eora: Saturday 28 June, 1-4pm @ The Nest Creative Space, Alexandria

What You’ll Learn:
By the end of this 3-hour workshop, you’ll have a solid introduction to natural dyeing and be able to take home your own creations. Topics covered include:
Bundle-dyeing (eco-printing)
Natural ink painting on paper
Flower pounding
Dyeing with food waste
Using leaves, flowers, and natural extracts
Working with plant and protein fibers
How to use mordants and modifiers to adjust colors
Included in the Workshop:
1 x silk scarf to dye
1 x cotton tote bag to dye
Mordant samples to take home
An abundance of fresh leaves, flowers, and other plants to experiment with
Natural dye extracts and powders
Natural inks for creative play on paper
A delicious grazing platter by The Pavilion (come hungry!)
Wine, beer, coffee, and tea available for purchase (Newcastle only)
Snacks and tea provided at Gosford Regional Art Gallery & The Nest Creative Space
What to Bring:
Closed-toe shoes
A plastic or green bag for taking home your wet fabric
Onion skins (dried, crunchy—no smelly ones, please!)
Any plants from home you’d like to try dyeing with (suggestions: geraniums, roses, hibiscus, marigold, eucalyptus, and more!)
Join Katie for a Fun, Creative Afternoon
You’ll leave the workshop with your very own hand-dyed textiles and a new appreciation for the beauty of natural dyes. Plus, Katie’s book, Hand Dyed Designs, will be available for purchase.
