Myrobalan is made from the ground nuts of the terminalia chebula tree. As a strong source of tannin, myrobalan can be used in the mordanting process for plant fibres like cotton and linen.
As a dye, myrobalan plant yields a light yellow, or dark grey with iron.
Use at 15-20% weight of fibre for mordanting or dyeing.
Instructions: Dissolve 15-20% weight of fibre in warm water and add to the pot. Add the pre-wetted fibre and slowly increase the heat and allow to simmer for about 60 minutes, stirring occasionally. You can then rinse the fibre and dye immediately or follow with aluminium.
Myrobalan can be used without a mordant on protein fibres like silk and wool for a buttery yellow shade.
