Black Walnut Powder (Juglans nigra)  – Natural Dye

Rich, earthy, and beautiful—Juglans nigra, or black walnut, is a beloved natural dye known for its high tannin content and deep, warm tones. This dye works without a mordant but colours are generally richer when used in combination with aluminium or iron. 

Expect soft browns, smoky greys, and deep cocoa hues. Add alum for lighter browns, or use iron to deepen the colour into rich, dark browns. Walnut is incredibly versatile and works beautifully on both cellulose and protein fibres.

Perfect for immersion dyeing, and layering with other dyes for complex, natural palettes.
